Where to stay in Big Sky: Montage vs. One&Only
2 min read
Two standout full-service resorts, two very different travelers.
While we rented a house for our family trip, I also visited the two standout full-service resorts in Big Sky: Montage Big Sky and One&Only Moonlight Basin. Both are exceptional, but they suit different travelers.
Montage Big Sky
Montage Big Sky is the established choice for a larger family or multi-generational group. Set slopeside at Spanish Peaks, it is truly ski-in/ski-out and offers 139 accommodations, ranging from hotel rooms to sprawling residences. For a larger family, this is an especially compelling answer: the property feels like a self-contained village, with a bowling alley, arcade, children's programming, multiple restaurants, and a full spa. The larger residences—some with four to six bedrooms, private hot tubs, and butler service at the highest tiers—offer the privacy of a home alongside the ease and facilities of a full-service resort. The staff is attentive, the operation is polished, and it is easy to understand its high rate of repeat guests.
One&Only Moonlight Basin
One&Only Moonlight Basin is the newer, more design-led luxury option, having opened in November 2025. Its architecture and interiors, by Tom Kundig, are beautifully attuned to the surrounding landscape, with natural materials and a minimalist sensibility that lets Montana take center stage. The property is especially well suited to couples or smaller groups looking to settle in and savor the experience, and it has a more international feel than its counterpart nearby.
There are four restaurants, including the excellent Akira Back, where we had the chance to dine; a spa with a sauna and cold plunge; miles of on-property trails; and private gondola access to the mountain. There is even a speakeasy for after-dinner drinks and a firepit for making s'mores. It is a striking, immersive retreat for travelers who want to experience Big Sky through a more refined and sophisticated lens.
