Our first Carte & Compass retreat in Sardinia

3 min read

Community, longevity, and a different kind of retreat — in one of the world's Blue Zones.

We've just returned from hosting our first Carte & Compass retreat in Sardinia, one of the world's Blue Zones—places where people live measurably longer, healthier lives. What stood out most wasn't a strict wellness program or intense workouts, but something quieter: the power of community, shared meals, and everyday rhythms.

One of the most meaningful days was spent with Simonetta Bazzu, famous for her feature in Stanley Tucci's show Discovering Italy, at her ancestral culinary school in Gallura, in northern Sardinia. She taught us how to make ancient, handmade Sardinian pastas and breads using ingredients and techniques passed down from her centenarian grandmothers, learning what it looks like when food is rooted in place, memory, and family.

We were also privileged to meet some of those grandmothers and hear their longevity “secrets” firsthand. They don't hike for sport or log hours in a gym. They walk because that's how they get around. They eat locally sourced ingredients because that's what's available. They gather for long, communal dinners with family and friends and, yes, they drink a little wine. It's as much—if not more—about who they are eating and drinking with as it is about what's on the plate.

Another highlight was learning to make cheese with Antonio, a local shepherd, while a traditional tenor group performed the island's folk singing music native to the central mountain regions, particularly Barbagia. It was a small moment that captured so much of what makes Sardinia special: work and pleasure intertwined, culture woven into daily life, and community as a given, not a goal.
